Using SEO Software

SEO software makes it easier for you to perform a number of otherwise tedious tasks for optimizing your site.

Before looking further at this obvious statement let's first ask ourselves a bit about  SEO and why we might use it.

If you had a normal offline business in the high street, how would you attract customers?  You could stand inside the shop and hope that customers may wander in as they make their way along the high street.  This is exactly what you would be doing with your online business if you don't do SEO (search engine optimization).  Let's face it the common objective in all business either on or off line is to attract buying customers!

If we accept that SEO is our chosen way of attracting potential customers we should also consider the amount of time we want to spend on this function.  Effective SEO does take time and some of the work can be tedious.

We have the choice of manually optimizing our sites, which takes a long time or of using software which will make SEO tasks more efficient.  We could of course also outsource the work, but this is something you may be best to do after you find out for yourself what works.  Outsourcing can be hit and miss, if you do decide to go down this route, first check on forums for advice of who to use and who to avoid. Also outsourcing can be very expensive.

When considering which software to purchase for SEO you must keep in mind the key factors of optimization.  Some of these are meta tagging, content keywords and their density across your site, and inward linking from other sites.Social networking sites like digg, furl, squidoo and hubpages are great ways to do SEO and a good software will incorporate all of this.

So you would want to ensure that any SEO software you consider can perform at least these functions.  There are many SEO software manufacturers, so search long and carefully for one that suits your budget and your needs.

Aside from the above factors it would also be beneficial for your SEO purposes if the software gives you an insight to what's happening on your competitors sites. Remember sites which already appear in the top ten have cracked what it takes to appear there!  So if you emulate their profiles you are bound to do much better in the SEO stakes.  Why reinvent the wheel!

By using SEO software, you will be able to tell what works, what doesn't, and test methods for increasing ranking. Ranking high in the search engines is a fundamental requirement if you want your internet business to succeed.  And SEO software will help you achieve these rankings quicker and more efficiently than doing it by hand.

To your success,

SEO-Tips

SEO is something you can pay to have done for you, alternatively you can do much of it yourself.  Just remember there is a steep learning curve with any type of SEO, however a few basics should be borne in mind.

Basic strategies don't require much money, if any, and can be achieved after just a little time spent on research.  This 'do it yourself' approach is a good way for you to understand the basics of SEO, and you can at a later date, after you've earned some money, re-consider outsourcing your SEO needs.

Before you even reach the stage of thinking about effective SEO, you should firstly consider the domain names you intend to buy.  These are an often overlooked key in search engine ranking success.  Ideally for SEO purposes the domain name would contain some keywords relevant to what you are going to promote.

This SEO principle also applies to your website structure, for example let's take something as simple as your website page titles.  Each page you make should be titled with SEO in mind, that is, by using relevant keywords in the page title.  This will allow the search engines to rank your page according to relevant searches by potential customers.

You then need to consider the benefits of relevant meta tags to SEO.  You will want to have your page description showing relevant keywords, especially near the start and end of the description.  The keywords meta tag is just that, it's the section of the page where you place what you consider to be the most relevant words or phrases that potential customers may use in searching for your product.  Each of these words or phrases should be separated by a comma with no spaces left in between the end of one phrase and the beginning of the next.

You may have heard the term 'sitemaps'.  These are another tool in getting your site appearing higher in the rankings compared to competitors.  Make sure you place a sitemap, at minimum, on your index page.

Also be aware that the internal construction of your site is important in SEO.  The search engines are looking for easy navigation between pages on your site.  Make sure that you don't have broken links, that is links which lead to nowhere!

How often should I update my website, is a question I'm often asked?  My own experience is at least once a week.  So add comments, articles, new pages and so on to your site.  This will keep the site ranked consistently higher in the search engines than one which is built then neglected.

You may have heard the saying in respect of SEO, that 'content is king'.  This is indeed true.  For the most effective SEO you need to ensure that you sprinkle your main keywords for that page throughout the page content.  The greatest concentrations being at the start and at the end.  Bear in mind though that your text has to be user friendly too!

Most of the above SEO you can do yourself.  Don't expect overnight results though, any good SEO strategy usually develops and matures over time.

SEO, Can We Do It Ourselves?

SEO, or search engine optimisation, is something which we all realise we need to do to have a successful online business.  It's one of the main factors in the online marketing mix.  Can we do SEO by ourselves or do we need to outsource it?

There are a number of ways of looking at this.  For one we must realise that SEO is an acquired skill, it's not something that can be learned in a few weeks or months, it takes time and dedication to get it exactly right, and even then we may find the search engines change their algorithms  and we disappear off the radar!

This would imply that it may be best to outsource to an expert.  But what if you can't afford to!

Let's break SEO down to some smaller components and give this some more thought.

SEO can comprise of some of the following methods: -

Site content
Quality links
Meta tags
Page titles
Articles
Press releases

As you can see some of the above are related directly to your internal site construction and content, and some are what you would call 'off site' approaches, that is they help build inward links from other parts of the internet to your site.

Both are important for good SEO.

So what you need to do now is look at the list above and decide what you are able or willing to do on your own, and what would be best outsourced (if you can afford to).  If you can't afford to, then start with what you yourself can do until such time as you can earn enough money to outsource some of this SEO work, or even to purchase software to make the job easier.

So my advice to you is firstly learn how to do some of the basics on your own.  Examples would be site structure, internal links, page titles and content.  Also look to do some basic article marketing for yourself.  Once this gets rolling you may find that it's useful to purchase some SEO software and compare where your weaknesses lie in relation to what your competitors are doing, and then consider whether or not you need to start to outsource some of the more tedious SEO tasks.

So in conclusion, in the beginning it's probably best to get some experience of what works yourself.  That way in the future, when you decide to and can afford to outsource, you will have a better idea of what you are looking for from an SEO provider.

Search Engine Optimization  SEO

SEO requires some basic understanding of the topic itself before going at it boots and all.  As with any business approach, there are good, ethical and well regarded methods of promotion, and there are some which are not only frowned upon, but will get you banned from the search engines.

Here are some search engine optimization tips which will hopefully give a basic understanding  and a starting point.

Let's look at some SEO methods..

Link building is important.  To do this, there are several common approaches. Probably the easiest way to do this is to contact owners of similar websitest  than yours.  Offer to give them a link from your site to theirs, and in turn ask for a reciprocal link from theirs to yours.  If their site has a high page rank with for example Google, then you will benefit from tthe amount of traffic they get who will potentially click on your link while visiting their site.

This is also one of the ways that Google uses to rank your site, so definitely ethical and definitely worth pursuing.  However, avoid anyone or any company who offers to build your site links very quickly.  This is one way you will banned from Google and other search engines.

You've probably heard the saying 'content is king'.  Good relevant content is one of the most important factors in generic search engine ranking algorithms.  Make sure your site has plenty of relevant content and try not to use too much duplicate content.. Original content is King when it comes to SEO.

Relevance is the most important factor here.  If your site is about how to quit smoking you can't target keywords like this for example, 'learn the basics of internet marketing"  because internet marketing is not relevant to how to quit smoking and the search engines will heavily penalize your site's ranking if you do that.

That's not to say that you can't use different keywords on different pages of your site, just try to stick to one keyword phrase per page.

Blackhat SEO methods include link stuffing, doorway pages, using invisible text and so on. These do work but a word of warning for you.   If you persist with these methods you will probably be banned by the search engines, not a good long term strategy!

So in conclusion if you plan to be on the internet for a long time and are serious about building and marketing an online business, then stick to the ethical SEO methods.

My advice is to go for the longer term and ethical approach, and develop your SEO ranking slowly over time and you will definately reap the rewards.
